What is a fabric lab dip?

A lab dip is a small trial dyed to approach the requested color before the supplier commits to bulk production. Suppliers commonly submit several options because more than one formulation may be visually close while differing in hue direction, lightness or chroma.

The approval should identify the exact option—not simply say “the blue one.” Mark the option number, date and any instruction such as “approved as submitted” or “reduce redness and resubmit.” Keep one approved physical swatch with the buyer and one with the supplier whenever practical.

Is a digital color reference enough?

No. Digital files are useful for communication and artwork, but monitor settings and ambient light can change the displayed result. For critical custom colors, use a physical reference and compare samples under agreed conditions. What does ΔE mean in fabric color approval?

There is no single universal ΔE limit that is correct for every fabric order. Should buyers use visual assessment or a spectrophotometer?

Is the grey scale the same as a bulk shade tolerance?

How should shade variation be controlled in bulk fabric?
