Cotton double-gauze fabric layers and swatches for bedding development

What Is Cotton Double Gauze? A B2B Guide for Summer Bedding & Home Textiles

Cotton double gauze is a layered woven construction, not a fibre name or a guarantee of performance. For sourcing, buyers should specify the fibre composition, how the two lightweight layers are connected, finished GSM, usable width, surface texture and wash-related dimensional change. Its layered, softly textured construction can suit summer bedding and lightweight home textiles, but breathability, shrinkage and durability should be verified on the exact finished fabric rather than inferred from the name.

What does “double gauze” mean?

Weaving forms fabric by interlacing warp and weft yarns. In commercial double-gauze fabric, two lightweight gauze layers are connected at intervals to create one fabric. The term describes the construction; it does not tell a buyer whether the fibre is cotton, a blend or another material.

For example, Nantong Oulai’s current FAB-0028 combed cotton double-gauze floral fabric is listed as 100% cotton with a printed double-gauze construction. Two other active options—FAB-0142 and FAB-0153—are listed as 100% cotton, double-gauze jacquard fabrics for summer sheets, duvet covers and lightweight bedding.

How is double gauze different from ordinary single-layer sheeting?

Buyer question Single-layer woven cotton Cotton double gauze
Construction One woven fabric layer Two lightweight woven layers connected into one fabric
Surface Can be smooth, crisp, brushed or otherwise finished Often visibly textured or softly crinkled, depending on yarns and finishing
Specification risk Construction may be summarized by weave, yarn count, end/pick count and GSM The buyer also needs layer connection, face/back design and post-wash appearance
Best decision basis Approved finished sample plus measurable tolerances Approved finished and washed sample plus measurable tolerances

Neither construction is automatically “better.” A smooth hotel sheet, a casual summer duvet cover and lightweight sleepwear can require different surfaces, stability and laundering behavior.

Does double gauze automatically mean breathable or cooling?

No construction name alone proves a quantified comfort result. Air permeability depends on variables including yarn size, yarn spacing, layer density, finishing and the pressure difference used in testing. Two double-gauze fabrics can therefore perform differently even when their fibre content is the same.

ISO 9237:1995 provides a method for measuring fabric air permeability and remains current after confirmation in 2023. If airflow is a purchasing requirement, compare the proposed fabric with the buyer’s control fabric under the same method and conditioning. Avoid converting a supplier description such as “breathable” into a numerical or medical comfort claim without supporting test data.

Why can GSM be misleading for layered fabric?

GSM states mass per square metre; it does not explain how that mass is distributed between two layers, how open each layer is or how lofty the finished fabric becomes. A double-gauze construction and a compact single-layer fabric can have similar GSM while differing in thickness, opacity, drape and surface character.

FAB-0028 currently lists a reference range of 100–140 GSM and 150–250 cm width, with final values to be confirmed by item. The public records for FAB-0142 and FAB-0153 do not state one fixed GSM or width. Buyers should nominate one finished target and tolerance rather than approve only a broad product family. For more on weight specifications, see Oulai’s bedding fabric GSM guide.

Which construction details belong in a double-gauze specification?

  • Exact generic fibre name and percentage composition
  • Two-layer construction and method or pattern of layer connection
  • Face and reverse design, including whether both layers are dyed, printed or jacquard woven
  • Finished GSM and tolerance
  • Finished usable width and tolerance
  • Yarn count plus warp-end and filling-pick count where relevant
  • Surface texture before and after laundering
  • Required opacity, air permeability or benchmark comparison
  • Dimensional-change limits in length and width
  • Seam type, seam allowance and edge-finishing requirements for the finished article

Thread count should be defined carefully for a layered fabric. State whether a reported count applies to one layer, both layers combined or a particular test/reporting convention. ASTM D3775-17(2023) covers measurement of warp-end and filling-pick count in woven fabrics, but a commercial specification still needs to explain how the layered construction is reported.

What should buyers test after washing?

ISO 6330:2021 specifies domestic washing and drying procedures used in textile testing, while ISO 5077:2007 addresses determination of dimensional change after appropriate washing and drying procedures. These standards provide methods, not universal pass/fail limits.

For double gauze, agree on the machine type, detergent, cycle, drying method and number of cycles, then assess:

  • Lengthwise and widthwise dimensional change
  • Change in surface crinkle, loft and hand feel
  • Layer separation, puckering or distortion around connection points
  • Edge fraying and seam appearance
  • Color change and staining for dyed or printed constructions
  • Print registration and appearance where applicable
  • Finished-product fit and panel alignment

Which current Oulai options illustrate the category?

Product Live product facts Useful development question
FAB-0028 100% cotton; combed double gauze; floral print; bedding, adult sleepwear and lightweight home textiles How should the print and reverse layer look after the agreed wash sequence?
FAB-0142 100% cotton; jacquard woven; double-gauze construction; summer sheets and duvet covers Which pattern, GSM, width and finished texture will be approved?
FAB-0153 100% cotton; jacquard woven; double gauze; summer sheets, duvet covers and breathable-bedding positioning What air-permeability or benchmark requirement supports the intended positioning?

These are current catalog descriptions, not lot-specific laboratory results. Nantong Oulai can use them as starting points for sample development, but the buyer should approve the exact construction and evidence required for the order.

Does a company certificate make every double-gauze order certified?

No. The active product pages above do not state a product-specific certification. If a certified fibre, chemical-safety or chain-of-custody claim is required, request the current applicable scope certificate, product eligibility, claim permission and any order-level document required by that scheme. Do not place a certification name or logo on packaging based only on a general supplier capability statement.

Double-gauze buyer checklist

  • Choose the exact end use: sheet, duvet cover, pillowcase, sleepwear or another article.
  • Approve a finished swatch and a swatch after the agreed wash/dry sequence.
  • Record composition, GSM, usable width and tolerances.
  • Define both face and reverse appearance.
  • State how fabric count is reported for the layered structure.
  • Specify air permeability only when a measurable requirement is needed.
  • Set dimensional-change and appearance limits.
  • Check seam construction and edge behavior on a sewn prototype.
  • List any certification or claim documents required for the exact order.
  • Use the pre-shipment roll inspection guide to convert the approved specification into release checks.

FAQ

Is double gauze always 100% cotton?

No. Double gauze describes a construction. Confirm the generic fibre names and percentages for the proposed item. The three Oulai examples linked in this article are currently listed as 100% cotton.

Is double gauze always better for summer bedding?

No. Suitability depends on the exact construction, finished product, target market and verified performance. Compare samples rather than deciding from the material name alone.

Does higher GSM mean lower air permeability?

Not necessarily. GSM, yarn spacing, layer openness and finishing all matter, so test the exact fabric when air permeability is important.

Why should buyers wash a sample before approval?

Layered fabric can change in dimension, texture and appearance after laundering. A washed approval sample helps define the intended final character.

Can a double-gauze product automatically use an OEKO-TEX, GOTS or other certification logo?

No. Logo and claim use depends on the applicable scheme, valid scope and product or order documentation. Request evidence for the exact material and claim.
